knitting, cake and stencilling, now that's my kind of ménage a trios!

These intricate stencils will add a hint of Icelandic Spice to your coffee or cake. Perfect for tarting up that winter desert or steaming beverage and just made for sharing with friends.

Lovingly designed by a dear (and much missed) friend of mine, ex pat Melbournite and artist Megan Herbert, each stencils image beautifully interprets elements of Iceland's scenery and culture on to your hot chocolate, cake or hearts fancy! Mine were delivered in person by the designers little sister after being held hostage by an enormous ash cloud for a couple of weeks which makes them that much sweeter.

If you would like to adorn your own cakes with some romantic scenery or a bit of knitting you can visit Megans shop here.

Vintage Kimono Fabric Sale at BiECO!

Anyone who has a deep love for the beautiful fabric and designs of vintage kimonos will not want to miss the Kimono Reincarnate sale at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market! Melanie will be setting up shop in the centre of St Augustine's Church Hall with an extensive selection of kimono fabric and her very own gorgeous Kimono Reincarnate products.

"I'm very excited about the upcoming Eco market for a few reasons.

Firstly, it really makes me assess how "eco" I really am being with the pieces I make. I use re-purposed vintage kimono fabrics in most of my pieces but often combine them with other material. For this market, I'm really focussing on those that are mostly recycled or from sustainable material.

I've been having a great time folding and hand-stitching away, making my Japanese kanzashi flowers, all made from either vintage or antique kimono silks. They usually come in a cute little tin, but if at the Eco market, you choose for them to go "nude" you can take a little off their normal price."

"The first pieces from my new "Kyoto" range will be making their BrisStyle debut. These pieces are little Japanese Kokeshi dolls made from bamboo and vintage kimono silk with hand painted details. I love working with bamboo, firstly as it's a sustainable wood, but for me it also conjures up memories of the the bamboo forests in Kyoto and well, it's just so beautiful to the touch. So silky and smooth."

"The other reason I'm extra excited about the Eco market is that I get to share many of these gorgeous kimono fabrics. There will be fabric pieces big and small, full obis and full kimonos all for sale. While I've been sorting and bundling them, I sit and just breathe in their history, trying to imagine their past, who owned the kimono and where they wore it. I love sharing my love for these pieces and understand that glint in peoples' eyes as they find a fabric that really speaks to them. I love hearing the excited ideas for their use, or the hushed confessions of plans of adding it to the stash."

This is a once in a lifetime event for all fabric lovers! Only at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market on Saturday 10 July, 9am-2pm at St Augustine's Church Hall and Grounds, Racecourse Road, Hamilton. BiECO is supported by Peppermint Magazine.

Wimcee at BiECO

For those who love a little bit of up-cycled Wimcee, here's a sneak peek of what Steph has in store for the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market!

"While most of my usual stock is made from new fabrics and fibres, I have previously offered a few eco-friendly pieces, so the BiECO is a wonderful opportunity to devote extra time and energy to up-cycled denims, reconstituted and embellished woollies, and all manner of wimcee-cal numbers put together from my supply of vintage fabrics, buttons, ribbons, trims and scraps. As usual, just never quite enough hours in the day and days in the week to make good all the ideas I'd like to try out, but so much fun!"

Check out fabulous new Wimcee wares at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market on Saturday 10 July, 9am-2pm at St Augustine's Church Hall and Grounds, Racecourse Road, Hamilton.

I miss you angle

The fascination with angles, and geometric shapes has been abundant, and a fixation of sorts since art school and a subject I periodically walk away from, then back to  like a co-dependant relationship, but a nice one.  I like the tactile aspect of canvas and paint, and the infinite potential of shape.  With painting I'm really more abstract, and structure, form and texture play a big part. Here's a couple of oldies.  I am hanging out to do some larger scale painting soon hopefully.

inaluxe + real living

I was surprised to hear from friends that real living featured inaluxe on two pages in their July issue. It was quite exciting and something to look forward to seeing, so as soon as the magazine came out we went and bought it. Unfortunately we did not get a mention. I'm not sure how this happens - use of art work for publication without acknowledgement or contact. Oh well. More from us soon!

Gretchenmist

One of the loveliest surprises Jason and I recieved since moving into our new home was this extraordinary package of goodies from Belinda of Gretchenmist.  We have them tucked away safely for now, but we look at them regularly, and it's hard to pick a favourite. Luckily, we are allowed to admire them all equally, and don't need to fight over who gets which one! ha ha ha. Belinda is one of the loveliest people I have had the pleasure of meeting since blogging and etsy, and as an admirer of her work I am quite humbled to get such amazing gorgeousness as a house warming present.  As well as the shop link above, Belinda also has a sensational blog! Thanks a million Belinda - we love you! xo

today i'm loving...

sweet floral paper goods from Rifle Paper Co. ~ kinda folksy and cute but in a grown up sort of way, i think it's the slightly sludgy colour palette that gives them that vintage / retro look... probably why i love them so much... :)

~ top to bottom : 1. floral heart print, folk card set, 2. Frances thank you card, 3. Ava thank you card, 4. botanical notes and calling card set, 5. Ella thank you card ~

oh yes, and i do love that they have given pretty girls names to their range of thank you cards... :)

a lovely day to you all... !

Cereal Box Marble Run

This idea popped into my head the other day when trying to think of something fun to do with cereal boxes.  I always loved marble runs when I was a kid, and this one was very easy to make.  Jack and Tess really loved it too.  We had to go finish off some more cereal so I could make one for each of them.

To make one, first tape the lid of the box shut, and then using a knife, cut off the front panel.  Leave a little ledge on the bottom to keep the marbles from rolling out everywhere.  Then take the detached front panel and cut it into three strips.  Bend them at the ends and cut a notch on one side for the marble to run through.  Next I took a little extra cardboard from another cereal box and folded the end of it and taped it onto the bottom (see photos).  The folded end makes the marble run tilt back a little bit so the marble goes down the holes and doesn't fall out of the box.  Finally, tape the strips into the box and cut a little hole at the top to drop the marble through.  Then go find some marbles!

Granado Espada: Leticia

granado espada / sword of the new world cosplay - leticia

Very little is known about the Premium Item Merchant, Leticia, but players of Granado Espada know her very well. She sells in-game items that cost real money, so you can bet players think about her all the time, especially when they’re deciding whether or not to make a purchase.

I think it would be safe to say she’s from a family of merchants though? Or a family who is into the business.

Cute cosplay! I love her dress, but I wonder what she’s looking at? Thanks to Renae for sending this in!

"I use vintage and repurposed fabric and notions because I love them and because it is fun to find new ways to use old materials. But with increasing awareness of the environmental damage caused by mass-manufacturing my choice of materials has become more important. I will have a range of products for sale at the BiECO - bags made from repurposed curtains, purses made from vintage fabric, hair pins decorated with vintage buttons, and even some vintage craft supplies."

Check out Ali's fabulous re-purposed wares at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market on Saturday 10 July, 9am-2pm at St Augustine's Church Hall and Grounds, Racecourse Road, Hamilton. BiECO is proudly supported by Peppermint magazine.

Today's lifestyle movements are all about sustainable living, eating local, growing your own, making your own, restoring, recycling and repurposing. I love this Homemade Living series by Ashley English and so will you.

Keeping Chickens: Thanks to Martha Stewart, I thought owning chickens would be glamourous. Thank goodness I read Ashley English's Keeping Chickens. This book keeps it real. I found the information included in this book to be incredibly resourceful, informative and actually a delight to read. I found myself on several occasions spouting off facts to my husband in amazement (Did you know that cannibalism is common among chickens??). I also loved that in the midst of all the instruction & supply list are these great human interest stories: Portraits of a Chicken Owner.

chickencanning_0010

This book covers all details of keeping chickens under these main subject chapters: What to Consider, Selecting a Breed, Obtaining Chickens, Housing, Feeding, Hatching Eggs, Raising Chicks, Health & Wellness, Eggs and Recipes.

chickencanning_0014

I honestly can not say enough about this book and how well written it is. If you are considering chickens then you must read this book!

Canning & Preserving: Canning to me has always been intimidating. I always thought you either needed a degree in chemistry or you needed to be born in the 1920's. I can remember my Grandmother Tucker canning in her small kitchen in Alpharetta, GA. Canning brings back memories and traditions in my mind. I would love to learn canning so that I could preserve my garden all year around. I believe Ashley English is going to help me learn canning with this book.

chickencanning_0001

Ashley has such an easy way to her writing. I honestly believe that nobody writes about homesteading like Ashley. Of course, this book does not disappoint.  The book is divided into the following chapters: Why We Can, Tools of the Trade, Canning Concepts, Ingredients, A Jam/Jellies/Preserves Primer, A Pickle/Relish/Chutney Primer, A Whole Fruit/Vegetables Primer and Seasoned Recipes. Again, Ashley adds human interest stories in her Portrait of a Canner, Canning parties and Trouble Shooting.

chickencanning_0002

I honestly believe that this is the only book you need to learn canning - Yes, it is that good.

Both Books: 5 Stars
