Blood+: Miyagusuku Kai

blood+ cosplay - mayagusuku kai Eldest of the Miyasuguku siblings, Kai was once a popular student and a star athlete. Shortly before Saya’s arrival, he was more rebellious and got into fights in school. His father’s kidnap and death forced him to grow up quickly and make amends with Saya and Riku, his 2 adopted siblings. He struggled to keep his only family together and eventually even took in Diva’s daughters as their father.

Quite an impressive, though simple cosplay. He is quite an interesting character, though I need to finish watching the series to find out what happens to him more… Great job! And I must say, I love that motorcycle!

Gundam Seed Destiny: Rey Za Burrel

imageThe cool and collected elite gundam pilot, Rey Za Burrel is not one to meddle in other people’s affairs. He is a good friend of Shin Asuka, and is very close to Chairman Gilbert Durandal.

In the past, Rau Le Creuset is also shown to be very kind to Rey, making him quite devastated to find out Rau was killed by Kira Yamato. He becomes even more infuriated at Kira for being the only obstacle to Durandal’s “Destiny Plan”.

This photo was actually taken by the same person who took Cagalli’s photo. This is quite a convincing cosplay of Rey. I just hope he doesn’t shoot anyone who is reading this blog.

Metal Gear Solid Cardboardcraft

This is not your regular papercraft, technically, cardboard is made out of paper so I guess we'll just say that it's a very very thick papercraft.

With SCEA's recent blitz campaign full of awesome Metal Gear Solid announcements, Kotakuite Kai-Hung "Chilli Coke" Chuang couldn't get enough MGS love so he had to create this 1:1 masterpiece. Pay attention to the detail, he really took time to nail every bit. If you want to create your own, the link to the original pattern is available below.

Iron Man Papercraft

Designer Raphael Gatt just sent an e-mail to inform us of his latest creation, an Iron Man papercraft. Let's check it out.

From the Marvel Universe, this fictional comic book superhero has an upcoming live-action film flying through theaters this May. Alongside it is a multi-platform video game tie-in which I hope doesn't suck (cross fingers). If you haven't seen the Iron Man trailer, here it is:

Bleach: Kyoraku Shunsui and Ise Nanao

bleach cosplay - kyoraku shunsui and ise nanao

Wait, wait, wait!!! This may be a feature on a Nanao cosplay, but that is not, I repeat, not me!

And now that everything is clear… :D

Kyoraku Shunsui is what would be known as a “lazy” captain. From what we know of him in the series so far, we is often drinking sake or sleeping, to the irritation of his lieutenant Ise Nanao. Nanao is a resourceful researcher with high respect towards her captain.

Apparently, when Nanao takes off her glasses, she can intimidate anyone, even Mayuri, Captain of the 12th squad.

Cute cosplay! This is probably the most accurate pair I’ve seen so far. Great job to both!

Onimusha Papercraft

Capcom's Onimusha video game series is one of the PlayStation 2's popular titles. It's a fantasy type action adventure genre set in medieval Japan. Here's an Onimusha papercraft featuring the games protagonist, Hidemitsu Samanosuke Akechi - e-mailed in by reader tinto.

The pattern is a bit rough and the score/cut lines are not well planned. But still, credit goes to the designer for trying. It's a PDO file so you'll need to download Pepakura viewer for this. Give it a try.

A bar diagram to solve a ratio problem

Dave at MathNotations had an interesting ratio problem:

In Virtual HS, the ratio of the number of juniors to seniors is 7:5.
The ratio of (the number of) junior males to junior females is 3:2.
The ratio of senior males to senior females is 4:3.
What is the ratio of junior males to senior females?

He asked if it can be solved using "Singapore" style bar model.

I'm not sure if this is exactly how they'd do it, but this is how I'd do it... so here goes.

After I made the diagrams, I soon saw that Dave's numbers are two awkward; the bar diagram drawing would get too messy because we'd need to divide it into too tiny parts to see anything.

BUT... you probably know about the PROBLEM SOLVING STRATEGY called "solve an easier problem". My agenda is therefore:

  • show how to solve a few related simple ratio problems using the bar diagram

  • solve a variant of the original problem (with friendly numbers)

  • solve the original problem.

1. Here's a bar diagram representing the fact that the ratio of the number of juniors to seniors is 7:5.

As you can see, the "whole" ends up divided into 12 parts (7 + 5).

We can use this diagram to solve problems such as:

If there are 768 juniors and seniors in total, how many juniors are in the school?
(Divide that into 12 parts, and then take 7 of those parts.)

Or...

If there are 95 seniors, how many juniors are there?
(Divide the number of seniors by 5, then multiply by 7.)

Or..
If there are 49 Juniors, how many students are there in all?
(Divide the number of juniors by 7, then multiply by 12.)

The diagram makes all this dividing/multiplying by 5/7/12 all crystal clear.

2. Let's change the numbers from the original problem to make them "friendly" for this approach. Let's solve this instead:

In Virtual HS, the ratio of the number of juniors to seniors is 7:5.
The ratio of (the number of) junior males to junior females is 4:3.
The ratio of senior males to senior females is 7:3.
What is the ratio of junior males to senior females?

Our diagram becomes, first of all, like before:

But then we add the additional information into it. The ratio of junior males to females is 4:3, which means juniors as a whole are divided into 7 parts (4 + 3). Similarly, seniors need divided into 10 parts.

Voila! It just so happens (wonder why?) that our original division into 7 and 5 parts works beautifully to give us juniors divided into 7 parts (they already are!) and seniors into 10 parts if we only split each part into 2.

So, what is the ratio of junior males to senior females?

In the diagram, the WHOLE is now divided into 24 parts. Junior males are 8 of those parts, and senior females are 3 of those parts. Their ratio is therefore 8:3.

3. Solving the original problem, with those unfriendly numbers.... the diagram looks sort of like this:

It gets messy... I'd prefer using the bar model as a stepping stone and to illustrate the basic situation, but eventually using the "least common denominator" or algebraic methods.

SD Hi-V Gundam Papercraft

A fantastic new papecraft from designer たーぼ, of the Turbolabo Blog. This Hi-v Gundam Papercraft sports the "SD" initials because of its trademark appearance. SD stands for Super Deformed, it's a common form of Japanese caricature in which characters are depicted as having small bodies shouldering large heads. The designer of this papercraft has been releasing the patterns one page per day and it seems that it's almost done. As of today there's five pages released including the Gundam's head, chest, waist, and two legs. To download this free papercraft, head on to the link below and click on the pictures (pattern), then save it. For my new readers, take a look at the pic below for some visual guide.

Granado Espada: The Scout

granado espada cosplay - female scoutNot a lot of people will be able to recognize this cosplay… Unless they’ve reached level of their scout (I believe it’s level 84?).

The female scout is the healer of the game. She is a valuable character (unless you don’t mind having to spend a lot of vis/game money for potions). She can also use daggers in combat, but most people use her for her healing abilities and buffs. Some people even say that a scout’s buffs can be a lot better than a wizards’s.

The only thing I’m not too sure about is the color of the costume… I think the default color is red, but there might be some options in the game in order to change her outfit orange. Beautiful detailing, I would say.

Relax Bear Papercraft

A cute bear paper model from designer クマリラ. It's called the Rilakkuma papercraft and is based on the characters created by the Japanese marketing company San-X. The name Rilakkuma translates to Relax Bear, it comes from the combination of two Japanese words - rila(relax) and kuma(bear). As you can see on the picture above the Relax Bear papercraft is accompanied by two other characters, namely, Korilakkuma (smaller white bear) and Kiiroitori (yellow chick). Those two don't have any patterns available yet, be sure to sign up to our feed to keep you updated.

This Relax Bear papercraft is very popular marketing tool in Japan for all things related to relaxation, it even has a Nintendo DS video game that came out on November 2007 titled "Watashi no Rilakkuma". Here's a video of the DS game and below that is the link to the pattern.

Concept of average

I felt like giving away something again to help all of you who need math lessons... This one is taken from Math Mammoth Division 2 book and is a lesson on the concept of average... meant for initial teaching for 4th-5th graders who have mastered long division.

I've written it quite recently, and in fact improved it just last night by adding the bar graph problems into it. (That seems to be the "way of life" with these books: I constantly keep tweaking and improving them as I learn. Which means constant uploading of files here and there... keeping our bandwidth usage large...)

The lesson mainly uses word problems, BTW. Please post your comments below; I'm anxious to hear them!

The free stuff on their site includes an electric guitar papercraft and a mouse pad papercraft, all emblazoned with Paper Girl's likeness.

I don't know what to think of this, I'll just let you guys make your own conclusions. But before you head to the link, please note that some photos on their web site are NSFW.

Final Fantasy VIII: Rinoa Heartilly 02

final fantasy 8 cosplay - shirokumapan rinoa heartilly Hm… What do you guys think? Does Shirokumapan rival Shibata Ina’s version of Rinoa?

I honestly can’t decide the two of them… I suppose there’s also the problem that in the original game, it’s a bit difficult to know Rinoa’s “true” personality when we never heard her talk! But I think Shirokumapan and Shibata Ina both do a brilliant job portraying her!

Realistic Beetle Papercraft

3DPaper is a Korean papercraft (commercial) site that designs and sells proprietary and licensed paper models. They have provided two very realistic insect papercrafts available for free downlaod on their web site.

In case some of you are interested to know where these insect papercraft got their names, the one on the left is a stag beetle (Lucanus maculifemoratus), it's a species of beetle belonging to the Lucanidae family, it has a very large and distinctive pincer that closely resembles stag (male dear) antlers. The other one is a Japanese Rhinoceros beetle (Allomyrina dichotoma) which belongs to the Scarabaeidae Family. Just by looking at its giant horn you can clearly see how it got its name.

Kanon: Misaka Shiori

kanon cosplay - misaka shioriThe younger sister of Kaori Misaka, Shiori is a first year student who has been ill since birth. Because of this, her sister chooses to keep her distance from Shiori, thinking that it would be much easier when she eventually does pass away.

Because of this, Shiori became very lonely, and eventually wanted to kill herself to relieve everyone’s burden on her. But a chance meeting with Aizawa Yuichi and (the spirit of) Tsukimiya Ayu changes her decision to take her life. Her life was expected to have only lasted until her birthday of that year. She later confesses that she never wanted to die, and had a miraculous recovery.

Isn’t this a cute cosplay? This is actually Kipi, the same cosplayer we’ve seen as Asuka, Shana, and even Misa-Misa! I think she’s become a reader’s favorite now…

Lamborghini Papercraft - Gallardo

When you see a Lamborghini, you see power, performance, elegance and a very unique style. It's top of the line both in and out. It makes heads turn and (fill in the blank) drop whenever it drives by. An avid fan of the car, Japanese designer 74式 has this mustardy yellow colored Lamborghini papercraft (Gallardo) waiting on his garage for you to download. But before we head on to the pattern, would you believe that the Italian State Police (equivalent to the Highway Patrol here in the US) uses Lamborghinis as their patrol vehicles?
