WALL·E Papercraft Robot

Designer Gary Pilsworth has released a WALL·E papercraft based on Pixar's new animated film coming out June 2008. WALL·E is short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth Class.

The year is 2700 and mankind has left Earth. After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was built for, WALL·E the robot, discovers a new purpose in life when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE. She realizes that WALL·E has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planet's future, and races back to space to report her findings to the humans. Meanwhile, WALL·E chases EVE across the galaxy and sets an adventure into motion.

Yu-Gi-Oh!: Pharaoh Atem / Yami no Yugi

yu-gi-oh! cosplay - yami no yugi The nameless pharaoh’s spirit who resides in Mutou Yugi’s body, Atem, more commonly known as “Yami no Yugi” or “Yami” for short, often appears in Yugi’s Duel Monsters battles, either to help him, or to completely take on the battle.

In ancient times, the young pharaoh sealed the dark magic of the Shadow Games with his own name and soul into the Millennium Puzzle. Yugi’s grandfather found this artifact and Yugi took eight years before he finally solved the puzzle, unlocking the Shadow Games, and Pharaoh Atem’s soul. The pharaoh resides in Yugi’s body, somewhat similar to the reincarnation of Egyptian Priest Seto as Kaiba.

Interesting hair. I wonder how much hair cement was used on that wig? It can’t be the cosplayer’s real hair, can it?

Not as detailed or as polished as the Front Mission Chokipeta version, this simplified mecha papercraft has a unique feature that I've only seen two or three times before in other paper models - it's got bones. By bones, I mean its got articulation points/hinges that enables it to move its arms and legs. You might recognize the look of the papercraft, it was based on the Zenith mecha from Front Mission 4. I only have my genes to blame for this making addiction of mine.

It comes from a childhood of watching Grandma and Mum knit, sew and bake (my dollies were always so well-dressed!). I remember always having my own little projects on the go to mirror whatever the grown-ups were doing.

I come from line women who were always doing something. My hands are always doing, and so is my mind – there are so many yet-to-be-realized creations in there, that I will have to live three lifetimes in order to fulfill them all!

I am inspired by paper ephemera (postage, tickets, old magazines and books...), vintage designs, memories, thriftiness and simplicity. I have always been fascinated with ephemera: collecting ‘rubbish’ to the shock of school friends, hoarding tickets and gathering old treasures. Using these things in my work, as well as vintage and rescued fabrics and buttons, I love imaging the past and trying to recreate some sense of nostalgia in the things I make. Although the things I make are quite varied – bibs, books, brooches, they all have this ‘looking back’ quality to them.

With my making addiction, the things that warm my heart the most are making books and bringing together different materials (whether they be fabric, paper or buttons) to make a wonderful new ‘whole’.

My etsy shop has been a brilliant force – fuelling my addiction and my creativity! Like the women in my family before me, I hope to pass this desire and compulsion to make things on to my own children and perpetuate this wonderful making addiction!

Stop by my etsy shop to see the fruits of my making:

Heart of the Matter conference

Heart of the Matter will he hosting an online homeschool conference during July 30 till August 3.

What is a virtual conference all about?

"Each speaker will just log in at her/his scheduled time, with a plugged in microphone, speak about their topic (approximately 30-40 minutes), and then hold a Q/A session with the listeners (approximately 20-30 minutes). All the while the attendees will get to chat amongst themselves in true Instant Message format.

We really want the conference to be less like a "seminar" and more like a bunch of close friends in a chat room. We want everyone to feel comfortable. Some sessions will also be pre-recorded. Just wait till you see what some of your favorite home school personalities have done to educate and entertain you! At the end you will join in to chat with them, ask questions, and they will answer."

Well, yours truly is planning to be a speaker as well...
Anyway, here's a link for more info and you can sign up as well. Place my name (Maria Miller) in the "add special instructions" field, please, so they know I referred you.

I apologize if my blog seems biased to some, if not most. It’s really not my intention.

Marbles problem to solve

Here's a nice "brain teaser" problem sent to my way... probably a student who wants to know the solution. I'll post it for you all and the solution in a few days.

204 marbles are divided into 3 groups according to colour. Ahmad found that there are twice as many blue marbles as white marbles and there are fewer red marbles than blue marbles. Ben found that the number of marbles in each group are divisible by 4 and 6. Cally found that the number of marbles in each group is less than 100.

How many red marbles are there?

(I do not have a clue where the problem originates, but I DO LIKE it!)

Solution:

Now, we need to find three numbers.

The one hint tells us that one number is double the other, and the third is less than the first (the doubled one). This won't yet get us started.

It is actually the latter hints that provide a starting point.

We learn the numbers are divisible by 4. They're also divisible by 6, which means they're divisible by 2 and 3. But we already knew they're divisible by 2 (since thye were divisible by 4), so the new information in this hint really is that the numbers are divisible by 3.

Divisible by 4 AND divisible by 3 means.... DIVISIBLE by 12!

Also all numbers are less than 100.

This really now restricts our "search space". We're looking at multiples of 12 that are less than 100.

Now, one was double the other. Since the 8th multiple of 12 (96) is the largest we can use, then two of the numbers COULD be the 4th and 8th multiples of 12 (48 and 96). They could also be the 3rd and 6th multiples of 12 (36 and 72).

The first hints will now "lock in" the solution... the sum has to be 204, which is 17 x 12. So, choosing 4 x 12, 8 x 12, and 5 x 12 - or 48, 96, and 60 - as our numbers will work. And, there are therefore 60 red marbles.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Youko Kurama 03

Also of note, the cosplayer is obviously female, don’t you think? A very cute one too. Probably the best looking Youko compared to this one with Hiei and the most recent one some people probably still remember.

I really love the hair and the ears on this cosplay though. The ears look so soft. Great job!
