Smitten with knittin'...

...so for the whole of january and most of february i didn't pick up my knitting needles once! then i promised myself that i wouldn't start any new projects until i had finished all my wips! it gets worse - as an extra incentive i instructed myself that i wouldn't use my fab new knitting bag until all my wips were done! technically my red cardi isn't quite finished but all the knitting and seaming is done and that's good enough for me, anyway, i'll press it tomorrow - honestly ;)

...so here she is, my beautiful new knitting bag :) she is designed and made by the very talented Hsin of Walking Wardrobe on etsy, i just adore this green fabric!

...and how perfect do my brooches from Sophie (Sophie Isobel Designs) look perched along the top?

...the two best things about this bag are, a - it has a really wide opening so you can get to all your bits and bobs without having to rummage around in fear of being stabbed by a knitting needle, and b - it's so roomy, i've got two wips living comfortably in there! think of how many wips i could have on the go if i got another one ;)

...now i'm off to satisfy another knitting urge, hope you're all having a lovely weekend!

Area 51 Papercraft - Warning Sign

Area 51 Warning Post PapercraftI don't really follow much with the UFO news stories but I saw an hour-long episode of the UFO Hunters series in the History Channel a couple days ago and it was called "Area 51 Revealed".

It was the very first close-up on the US's infamous secret base - Area 51 (aka Groom Lake) using a super duper 1140 mm lens to capture all the HD glory. The series showed satellite photos that revealed new buildings, runways, and towers. There was also unmarked planes that conducted "secret flights" between Area 51 and Las Vegas.

Youtube user integrajoey has the complete episode (divided into 5 parts), so check that out if you don't have History Channel at home.

And the related stuff, a papercraft of an Area 51 sign post that you'll find around the site's perimeters.

ROMMY Papercraft Toy - Small HouseHere's the new ROMMY paper toy, the theme is "Small House".

NAME: Christine Poole

ETSY SHOP NAME: Little Diva Crafts

1. Can you please describe the items you are giving away to one of our readers?

Little Girl’s Craft Apron

Every little girl needs somewhere to keep her pencils and scissors etc when she’s being creative, so why not in her very own frilly apron!

Coin/Card Purse

This funky little purse measures 10cm x 9cm and is big enough to keep your money, license, credit cards etc in your back pocket on a night out. Or if like me, you have kids and rarely get a night out, any little girl would love this purse to play with. The fabric is Amy Butler French Wallpaper in Duck Egg with the lining in Red and White stripe.

2. How would you describe your work?

Unique, varied and funky.

3. How did your Etsy shop come into being?

I bought the fabulous book “Softies” and started making lots of them for my kids and as presents. Then I thought I’d design my own softies, who are now known as The Imbi Family. My sister had previously introduced me to Etsy and I thought that would be a fantastic place to start selling my “family” and many other creations.

4. Who or What inspires you?

Most of my inspiration comes from fabric. There are so many beautiful fabrics out there with the most delicious colour combinations and patterns that I really have to stop myself buying them all.

I also get inspiration and ideas from my children and the things they love and need.

5. Can you describe your studio / work area?

I would love my work area to be beautiful, organized and inspirational but unfortunately it’s not! (yet anyway). I currently use my computer desk, sewing board and dining table and keep all of my things in the study.

6. What is your favourite thing in the shop at the moment?

My Diva Dresses – I’ve got more on the way too as I’ve recently received more beautiful fabrics.

7. Do you have any other places that people can view/purchase your work?

I will also have my own website up and running soon with links to my online stores, details of upcoming markets etc. It will be

NAME: Miriam

ETSY SHOP NAME: Bubba Chenille

1. Can you please describe the item you are giving away to one of our readers?

Pink and brown chenille zip pouch

This is my new creation especially for this givaway, hope you like it... I have a few of these as they are soooo handy. Here are some uses: camera, small bag (will hold lippy, mirror, cards, cash, tissue and keys) make up bag, small sewing project, really the list is endless. It measures 8.5" x 5.5" or for the young ones 22cm x 14cm. The lining is the same as the third fabric from the top, all are 100% cotton.

2. How would you describe your work?

Spur of the moment! I get an idea and I go for it. It also has to be "quick" or I lose interest.

3. How did your Etsy shop come into being?

I wanted to try and sell my items amongst other handmade sellers and to "get out there" this is the best online store. I sell at markets also, mainly The Handmade Expo, a relatively new market for handmade only.

4. Who or What inspires you?

Clever crafters and sewers and there are trillions of them!

5. Do you ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ as part of your creative process? If yes, how is your art / craft eco-friendly?

Anything that has chenille incorporated in it has come from pre-loved chenille, I am now a self confessed chenille-a-holic! I try to use chenille in all of my items, somtimes though I fall for fabric that I simply don't have the chenille to match but I still need to make the item... oh well!!

6. Can you describe your studio / work area?

My "design studio" is the third bedroom, no you can't look (a fabric bomb has gone off in there!) No bed of course, just sewing table, cupboards, shelves and storage boxes and not much floor!!!

7. What is your favourite thing in the shop at the moment?

The pink striped tote. I had a brain snap, and is made from a Mercer and Reid teatowel, with hot pink chenille trim. I'd rather be making bags than doing the dishes...

8. Do you have any other places that people can view/purchase your work?

2010 Winter Olympics Mascot Papercrafts

Here are the cute mascots for next year's 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics transformed into papercrafts. It is officialy the XXI / 21st Winter Olympic Games and then followed by the X / 10th Paralympic Winter Games. Those events will be held in both Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. Here's a brief description about the mascots:
Sumi is an animal spirit who lives in the mountains of British Columbia. Like many Canadians, Sumi's background is drawn from many places. He wears the hat of the orca whale, flies with the wings of the mighty thunderbird and runs on the strong furry legs of the black bear.

Quatchi is a young sasquatch who comes from the mysterious forests of Canada. Quatchi is shy, but loves to explore new places and meet new friends.

Miga is a young sea bear who lives in the ocean with her family pod, beyond Vancouver Island, near Tofino, British Columbia. Sea bears are part killer whale and part bear. (Miga is part Kermode bear, a rare white bear that only lives in British Columbia.)

Cultural Papercraft - Reog Ponorogo

Reog Ponorogo PapercraftSal Azad has another amazing papercraft based on Indonesian heritage, the Rego Ponorogo is a traditional dance that has a tiger's head and a wide-winged peacock as the principal features.
Ponorogo is most well known for the reog mask dance, which is said to have been created by one of the kings of Kediri in the 12th century. The performance re-enacts a legendary battle between Pujangga Anom, a minister from the court of Ponorogo, and Singa Barong, guardian spirit of the forest of Lodoyo. The former had aroused the anger of Singa Barong when he stole 150 tigers from the forest, apparently to be offered as a dowry payment for a princess of Kediri, whom the king of Ponorogo wished to marry.

My moodboard...

...i'm pleased to say i have achieved a couple of things this week, i have re-hung my mood board picture frame with a new print in it. actually it's a sheet of wrapping paper designed by Hanna Werning, you can get it in the uk here...

...i've also got a couple of her prints on postcards too, the yellow and brown ones on the left, you can see more of them here...

...this butterfly one is my favourite, i love the mix of motifs and the colours are just gorgeous...

...part of this AnimalFlowers collection is also available as a wallpaper-poster, such a cool idea!
...

...another thing i achieved this week was to tidy my spring fabric collection and arrange it in pretty colour groupings...

...despite being surrounded by all this beautiful pattern and colour i just can't seem to lift myself out of this design funk i've been in for the last couple of weeks. i don't know what's going on, i feel like i've got lots of ideas in my head but they're not working their way down to my fingers and into my work, so frustrating!

...i have managed to finish my last knitting wip though, my gorgeous red cardigan, it just needs to be blocked and a button added before i can show you some pics...

...anyway, i hope there is more creating going on in your space than there is here, and remember to check out Kootoyoo's blog for more creative spaces...

Sailing Ship Papercraft - Esmeralda "The White Lady"

Esmeralda Sailing Ship Papercraft
The Esmeralda (aka La Dama Blanca / The White Lady) is a barkentine tall ship that belongs to the Chilean Navy. It's hull is made of steel and has four masts to support its twenty one sails.

Shipbuilding on the Esmeralda, planned as a training vessel for the Spanish navy, first began in 1946. However, after an explosion the following year she remained unrepaired for several years, due to worsening economic conditions and other factors. Shipbuilding later resumed when it was decided that the Esmeralda would be transferred to Chile for purposes of debt repayment. In 1953 she was finally launched before a sea of onlookers, and has since sailed the waters of the world.
This ship papercraft was designed by Canon Creative Park's residen ship modeller, M. Nisiguchi - Senaun.

Equivalent fractions - a visual model of splitting the pieces further

With learning fractions, there is always the problem of "so many rules to remember". I offer this visual method of splitting the pieces further, and using the arrow notation as a remedy; hopefully this would help fix the method in students' minds.

Equivalent Fractions video at YouTube

Making equivalent fractions is like splitting all the pieces further into a certain number of new pieces. For example, if I split all the pieces in 3/5 into three new pieces, there will be 9 pieces. And, instead of 5th parts, they will be 15th parts. If you have an image and you split even the "white pieces" into three new ones, you'll see those 15 parts. So, 3/5 = 9/15.

The arrow notation shown in the video has one arrow between the numerators and another between the denominators. It also has a little "x3" written next to it. This is to signify into how many pieces we split the existing pieces.

This notation can help students not confuse equivalent fractions with fraction multiplication. The two fractions are equivalent or the "same amount of pizza"; one is not three times the other.

Please also see this free sample worksheet: Equivalent Fractions worksheet. This worksheet shows the same notation and the same idea as the video. It is a sample from my book Math Mammoth Fractions 1.

Please let me know what you think of this notation. I haven't see it anywhere else, but maybe it does exist somewhere. Do you think it confuses or helps students?

Equivalent fractions - a visual model of splitting the pieces further

With learning fractions, there is always the problem of "so many rules to remember". I offer this visual method of splitting the pieces further, and using the arrow notation as a remedy; hopefully this would help fix the method in students' minds.
