Reclaimed wood to new purpose for your home and garden: Andrew's Reclaimed

This shop is operated by husband-and-wife team Andrew and Melissa. They have enjoyed using many of these products. They hope you will too.  Here you'll find a growing assortment of eco-friendly goods for the home and garden.

Andrew does much of the woodworking, while Melissa handles administration, advertising, and such. Whenever possible, Melissa has stepped in to assist with woodworking, and has picked up a great volume of experience, and has opened her own shop, strictly for supplies, vintage, and findings. You can see her shop at rabbitsreclaimed.

They build almost everything here using woods we source by dismantling and re-milling ages-old piers, fences, barns, and other structures slated for demolition.

You can visit their shop here:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/andrewsreclaimed

Craft is the new black!

Brisbane’s hottest designers are bringing crafty back to the City this Friday night!

BrisStylette Holly of Pannikin Accessories is gearing up for another big night of craft in the city this Friday night at the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market in King George Square.

Holly’s cool and quirky designs are becoming synonymous with a new generation of young designers leading the way in Brisbane’s craft revolution.

“We have become very aware of how important it is to buy and create our own quality handmade goods as opposed to spending money on cheap mass produced items that don't have that same degree of love, care and attention to detail. I also think that craft has gained a new reputation as being very hip and fashion forward without looking stuffy and dated.”

Holly is taking it to the streets this Friday night at the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market where ethical consumers have the opportunity to buy the soulful and stylish handmade creations for which BrisStyle is becoming renowned.

King George Square provides the perfect environment to showcase BrisStyle’s talented designers. The central location and proximity to restaurants and public transport makes it the ideal shopping spot for those seeking chic handmade gifts for Christmas.

So come on down and let the Christmas shopping begin!

The crafty world of Bubbachenille

This week the BrisStyle team caught up with the mother of all things chenille, Miriam of Bubba Chenille for a little chat about her fabulous wares.

How would you describe your work?

Funky and modern, creating smiles for passers by! After all, who of a certain age, hasn't had a chenille bedspread? When people see my work and realise what it's made from you can see the connection from realisation to smile!

How did your Etsy shop come into being?

I seem to recall Trish, from Trishalan Designs telling me all about Etsy and BrisStyle in 2008 when I first met her at The Handmade Expo Market, I got onto it straight away!

Who or what inspires you?

Well if I didn't say my family first and foremost I'd be in big trouble. After that I think simply the materials I work with are the inspiration!

Do you ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ as part of your creative process?

All of the chenille I use is vintage, (the new stuff just isn't the same!) and I am now sourcing bedspreads further afield in the US, where there is more available, patterns and colours that you just don't see here. I also use vintage sheets in some of my work, they are nice and soft, all cotton and great for linings and trims. It is the part of my life where I am being a true recycler, not just a half hearted one like in other parts of my life!

Can you describe your studio / work area?

I have a separate studio detached from the home, in the backyard. We were getting sick of all the fluff in the house from the chenille, so when we were looking to relocate, this was something we had on our list of wants. I kind of go to work and come home every day now.

What is your favourite thing in the shop at the moment?

I love everything.

The crafty world of Chi Designs

This week the BrisStyle team caught up with Chi from Chi Designs, the perfect place to stock up on gorgeous handmade bags, clutches and accessories.

How would you describe your work?
I try to create bags and accessories that I would be happy to use myself. I spend a lot of time sourcing unique materials and fresh ideas to keep things interesting. I create a limited range of each design to keep items one-of-a-kind.

How did your Etsy shop come into being?
I began sewing as a hobby in March 2009 to fill in my spare hours. After making many mistakes and learning how to sew through many online tutorials; I found I was able to create a few bags that others really enjoyed. I opened my store on Etsy to spread the enjoyment and to fill my creative void.

Who or what inspires you?
I am continually overwhelmed and inspired by the work of the crafty folk found in Brisbane and interstate. The young design community is constantly surprising me with the interesting work that they create around me. And I am constantly pushing myself to emulate the wonderful creations I find daily on Etsy and Australian design blogs.

Can you describe your studio / work area?
I work full time, so my creative work area can be found wherever and whenever I can find the time to fit it in. At any which time; you can find fabric, pins, scissors and glue in my bed, by my TV, in our study and on my balcony.

What is your favourite thing in the shop at the moment?
I love my Love Clutch design, at the moment. It is designed using an organic hemp/cotton blend fabric by Umbrella Prints. It is bright and cheery and makes you think about love!

The crafty world of Tracey D Designs

This week the BrisStyle team had a chat to one of our members Tracey Donohoe of Tracey D Designs. Tracey specialises in handmade cards, and from time to time, other beautiful things. Here's a little peek into her crafty world...

How would you describe your work?
Increasingly eclectic! I started out with papercrafts, but am more and more getting back to my sewing roots, and have been making handbags, totes and toys, and am now exploring mixed media. I’m working on a series of fabric appliquéd coasters and some ‘paper fabric’ at the moment. Greeting cards and papercrafts are still my mainstay. I’m just having a ball!!!

How did your Etsy shop come into being?
I had been making and selling my cards for quite some time and had a couple of different people suggest Etsy. In my usual way, I explored and set up shop all in the one afternoon!! (which is why my shop is actually traceyd01, because, although they tell you, I was in a hurry and didn’t realise that your username becomes your shop name!!!) I just love Etsy, it’s full of such talented people and wonderful, quirky things of beauty. And Etsy introduced me to the wonderful BrisStyle Team, which I find an absolute privilege to be a part of.

Who or What inspires you?
Colour, thrift shops, my button collection, my children, nature, and of course other artists… I went to see the APT recently and was inspired by many of the works there. If I’m in an uncreative space, I get onto Etsy and the BrisStyle blog and am soon back on track

Do you ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ as part of your creative process?
Yes, I do more and more as time goes on. I’m a regular at Reverse Garbage and was brought up to ‘make stuff out of other stuff’, so to me it’s a much more creative way of working, and living for that matter. I went to the Lifeline Bookfest last weekend, and now have lots of lovely old books and pages to reuse. All my cards are posted between recycled cardboard to protect them, and as much as I can, I use recycled or upcycled materials, and I recycle as much of my waste as I can.

Can you describe your studio / work area?
I’m very lucky, and have just moved my craft space from a spare bedroom to a free standing building at my place that we call ‘the cottage’. I teach card making and scrapbooking and the space is perfect for that. It’s extraordinarily messy at the moment, but that’s the creative process, right?!?!

6. What is your favourite thing in your shop at the moment?
Probably my favourite thing would be the set of Regal Wedding Invitations. I love the way they fold out to reveal different information, and the pockets with info cards inside. I also love the embellishments (which I found on Etsy) which really set them off. I’d say that once my butterflies and coasters are up, they will be my new favourites!!

The Birth of BrisStyle

Esther of Green Envy Designs recently moved to Brisbane and feeling rather lonely, and having a hard time finding a job and meeting new people, she decided that sitting around moping was not what was needed. No, she was going to take the bull by the horns and change things.

Esther had many friends in her hometown of Adelaide who shared her creative/designing talents as a hobby, and she longed for a similar group of friends in Brisbane.

Esther says, "As I was browsing Etsy one day I realised just how many Brisbane Etsians there actually were. I checked out many of their shops and felt overwhelmed by the art they make. So I took it upon myself to contact everyone I could find and ask them to meet up. Again, I was overwhelmed by the volume of responses!"

When the meeting date arrived Esther was still feeling very nervous about how many people would actually show. 15 people had said they'd be there, 10 others said they would try to and 7 said that unfortunately they couldn't be there but would definitely try for the next one.

Esther arrived a little early to make sure all was well organised. Unfortunately the tables had not been set up yet, but within five minutes Ester had it sorted out and met the first of the new BrisStyle Team members, Andrea. Esther says, "I was impressed to hear she had not started selling on Etsy yet but was very close to doing so; she heard by word of mouth that there was to be a meet-up and she dropped by! WOW! How cool is that!? (this was Andrea from art'n'designing)"

Slowly other people started arriving and everyone settled themselves with a cup of coffee and conversation flowed.

The meet-up was a true success. Everyone was so excited at the opportunity to promote Etsy as a team, show Brisbane what real quality handmade means and share interests! Learn, talk and enjoy good company and most of all, combine our strength.

Of the initial people who accepted the invitation, not everyone was able to come in the end, but the 12 wonderful artists who came were:

Rebecca of Alma B with her gorgeous graphic designs available as print or jewellery;

Michelle of Pedrosprout and her lovely felted booties;

Momo of Studio Kurashi (stay tuned for listings!);

Jo of Desire to Inspire by MidcenturyJo with her unique style original art designs!

Olivia of SCAMPSville who creates original cross-stitches that reflect mischief and mystery;

Helen of Ruby Red Studios with gorgeous vintage jewellery and clutch purses;

Robyn of Hot Fudge with her great quality limited children's clothing line;

Andrea of Art'n'Designing (still in the process of setting up shop);

Emily of Kuber who creates gorgeous tin beasties and carved letters;

Amanda of Twinkle Star Art with her fabulous imaginative, colourful and fun graphics designs for children's rooms!

Alison of Jellygnite with her stunning plushies, handmade notebooks, art cards and jewellery;

Esther of Green Envy Designs, with stunning bead woven jewellery design treasures.

With these great artists the street team was set up and many more have since joined. BrisStyle is sure to become a great success!
