Introducing BrisStyle member...

NAME: Eliza Leahy
ETSY SHOP NAME: Elvenhair

1. Can you please describe the items you are giving away to one of our readers?

This Seirra ball point pen is made with Spanish Cedar. It is a lovely pen to write with, the natural timber is so much nicer to hold then plastic. It uses Parker refills, easy to get at newsagencies or pen shops. The gold is 24karat, and the metal has a dark gunmetal finish - it's just lovely!

2. How would you describe your work?

I love timber! I use to turn (turn - that's the shorthand term we use for using a lathe to make things) when I had a small farm at Mooloolah. Then I had my lathe in my goat shed! Now I live in the middle of Brisbane, in a town house, and the only place for it is a corner of the yard, protected from the elements by the eves of the house.

I make any small items out of wood - hair sticks (for holding up hair do's), pens, small bowls, ring holders, lidded boxes, spinning tops - and I have just started designing some toys for little boys, that I will have available before Christmas.

3. How did your Etsy shop come into being?

When I first started Etsy I was doing fine art. But when I got my lathe at the beginning of this year I was having so much fun that I had to start selling the things I was turning or run out of room!

4. Who or What inspires you?

Other woodworkers inspire me. I'm on a woodworking forum that is full of wonderful people who give freely of their experience to help others. A great bunch of people!

Also, the timber inspires me! I pick up a piece and look at it. Will it be a hair stick? A bowl? A lidded box? The pattern and shape of the timber helps to direct the end result.

5. Do you 'reduce, reuse, recycle' as part of your creative process?

Much of my timber comes from reclaimed sources. Sometimes I get bits that have come from old furniture. Sometimes it's timber that has been picked up from the forest floor. Some of the timber, such as Huon Pine (which isn't a pine) is so rare that they aren't allowed to cut trees, but it's available once it has died, and fallen naturally.

6. Can you describe your studio / work area?

I wish I had a huge shed with lots of work benches and room! What I do have is a corner of the yard, and when it's windy I can't work, because the sawdust gets blown around too much! And I love turning so much I really hate windy days!

I have my lathe, a scroll saw and a drill press.

And lots of pieces of timber waiting to be turning into things!

7. What is your favourite thing in the shop at the moment?

Spinning tops! I've just started to make the ones with handles, and the tops spin for so long! I love making them too. My sister in law said "Once you spin a top, you can't stop!"

I've also returned to doing custom portraits in oil paint.

8. Do you have any other places that people can view your work?

I have my websites - www.elvenhair.com and www.elizasart.com as well as my poor neglected blog, http://elvenhair.blogspot.com.

1. Can you please describe the items you are giving away to one of our readers?

This is one of my paper doll sets – The FairyTale Images Set. Paper Gals Paper Dolls are an original collage design created by myself. This set is fantastic fun for those young at heart (it’s really too complex for young children).

I have designed a paper doll you join together with brads. The clothes are all created from collaged images sources from retro childhood images and decorative papers. The paper doll faces are hand drawn and coloured by me and as such are unique.

This set contains parts to make one doll body with two different heads, and three gorgeous Art Nouveau inspired dresses! The ones in this set are collaged from children’s fairytale images.

You also receive brads, as well as a fabulous vellum envelope to store your paper doll pieces that has been created again in the Art Nouveau style. The dolls have been varnished by me to aid longevity.

2. How would you describe your work?

I would describe my work as all about me having fun and re-connecting with my childhood. The paper dolls were a favourite of mine as a child. I loved getting new doll books, cutting them out and making new outfits of my own for the sets. I also loved puppets and made many from all sorts of things. So the paper dolls that I make now are a mixture of these influences. I have also been drawn artistically to collage as a medium.

Taking minute bits of paper and other items and mixing them together to form something new has always given me great joy. You can combine ephemera with your work and make it 3-D and symbolic.

3. How did your Etsy shop come into being?

Etsy for me was about being able to connect artistically with many people at once. Like many artisans who create at home and give work as gifts to family and friends, whatever pleasure you give to others comes in the giving of the gift and after a while your family becomes very ho hum about another handmade thing for them. You lose your source of recognition and then slowly wind down to not doing anything creatively anymore. That is where Etsy steps in. People can see your work, they can admire your work (through hearting it etc) and then they can even pay you the ultimate compliment of using their money to buy your work. This, as an artisan, gives you encouragement to keep creating and growing. Plus you become involved in a community of like minded people.

So for me Etsy was a wonderful find mentioned in a craft magazine that allowed me to pursue the creating dream but at my pace.

4. Who or What inspires you?

I have to say that all the other fantastic crafters working online inspire me, especially the talented team of Brisstyle. I mean that genuinely. I get inspired by the little wins and seeing the fresh new work and all in people I have come to know. This gives me new creative energy all the time.

5. Do you 'reduce, reuse, recycle' as part of your creative process?

I do like to use “pre-loved” in my art process. I am a big fan of books and the skill and imagination that goes into the images in children’s books is amazing. To see them sitting in op-shops or even worse going to landfill is such a waste. In my collages I like to re-connect these old images with others in a new way. For example I have used the image of a fish from Pinnochio to make a dress in this Paper doll set.

Now the detail and work of the original is not lost forever but combined to form something new.

6. Can you describe your studio / work area?

Scary, frightening, not for the faint of heart. I really don’t know how I work in it at all. I do have a dream of one day cleaning up – but then that means losing creative time so probably it’s just best to keep adding to the piles instead.

7. What is your favourite thing in the shop at the moment?

I have to say I am loving the bookmarks I am making at the moment. Making a bookmark and using it in what I am reading everyday is a way to have my art with me all the time. And if they look like my paper dolls all the better.

8. Do you have any other places that people can view your work?

Chapter Two...Our Adoption Story

We witness a miracle every time a child enters into life. But those who make their journey home across time & miles, growing within the hearts of those who wait to love them, are carried on the wings of destiny and placed among us by God's very own hands.
- Kristi Larson

Chapter Two brings you a time-line and witness to God's gentle nudge. It was during this time that I began to feel the miracle.

It was November and I had walked out of the fertility office with my bags packed. Byron and I both had careers and we were starting to enjoy our remodeled home. I had been pregnant for over two years. In fact, I can't even do the math, is it even plausible to have 7 pregnancies in 2 years? I was now in a funk and trying to detox from the hopes and disappointments. I had prayed so hard to God to spare at least one of my babies and I was feeling let down. I was not necessarily angry at God, I was just exhausted and did not want to talk to Him anymore on this subject. I was moving on.

Then, something started to take place. On Nov 4, 2003... We watched Adoption Stories on the Discovery Health Channel and it spotlighted Commonwealth Adoptions International. We were both very moved by CAI's love for these children. We got online and requested information from CAI.

Nov 10, 2003... We Received information from Commonwealth Adoptions International. They produced a wonderful book of stories from adopted families. We sat and read these stories over and over. There was a flier included with the book about an open house in Tampa that weekend (Nov 15). It was only 7 1/2 hours away, so we decided to go.

By this time Byron and I were doing all the research on international adoption we could find. I was reading everything about adoptions, reading blogs about adoptions etc. From what I could tell, an international adoption was going to cost about $30,000. Yikkes! My brian started to work overtime. How could I get that kind of money? Before we went to Tampa, we contacted Compass Bank on Nov 13, 2003, about a 2nd Mortgage. This was going to be expensive, so we wanted to have all the money upfront.

Nov 14, 2003... Tim Plummer came and did an appraisal on our house for the loan.

T
he weekend had arrived (Nov 15, 2003). The appraiser had been to our house but we still did not know the value. So we pushed forward and traveled to Tampa to visit with Commonwealth Adoptions (CAI). They had an open house where we got to meet the adoption managers and some of the families. It was a very positive experience. It helped us to decide to go with CAI as our agency. We were a little strapped for cash that month (spent too much remodeling the house!), but when we stopped for gas we found $80 in the parking lot of the gas station. We left our number at the gas station and no one claimed the money. What a blessing... it paid for our hotel room. God was winking at us.

After the weekend in Tampa and with much discussion, Byron and I decided to take a leap of faith. We are not leapers. In fact, faith is our greatest struggle. I am not referring to just any faith, I am referring to the close your eyes and take the hand of God and let him lead you where He wants you to go, faith. That kind. So on Nov 17, 2003, we signed the contract with CAI and sent in the initial deposit. We also made contact with Phil Boyd, a local social worker, to start the Home Study. We were told from CAI, that we would need copies of birth certificates, marriage certificates etc and to order them as soon as possible because the states can delay mailing these documents (which is bad if you are trying to accomplish a "timely" adoption). Within 3 days of ordering all documents, they came in the mail. God was not playing.

This next date is another miracle. On Nov 19, 2003, the appraisal came back on our house. We bought our house a little over a year ago at $104,000, being in real estate, I knew that our house had not appreciated that much. The market at the time was averaging 3% a year. We were just hoping for any amount to help off-set the expenses. The appraisal came in at $135,000. This was a 30% increase in this little house's value. Absolutely incredible. Our adoption was 100% financed with a line of credit. Way more than we could have hoped for. God was serious.

Just a couple of paperwork dates...

Nov 20, 2003... mailed "initial" BCIS form I-600A. This takes a long time to get processed, so we wanted it in the mail right away.

Dec 2, 2003... Mailed initial money and paperwork to CAI to start the Preliminary Package and Dossier Prep.

Dec 6, 2003... We met with Amy Jamieson (a dear friend) at her office to get all of our Preliminary Package documents notarized. We are very grateful to Amy for all the work she was doing for us. There had been a lot of documents and she notarized them all, without charging us.
Seriously people, over 100 documents. God was placing angels among us.

Dec 7, 2003... Phil Boyd came to our home to do the Home Study. He sat with us for several hours and just talked about our lives. Phil is a great person and also an adopted parent (another Angel placed with us). He was going to China that next week to pick up his second adopted daughter. We were very nervous about the home study, but Phil made it easy. He basically just wanted to get to know us and make sure we knew what we were getting in to (Ha, much more to this story).

Jan 7, 2003... We Met with Phil Boyd in Pensacola to review the first draft of the Home study. We saw pictures of his new little girl and she is gorgeous. This made us so excited for our adoption experience!

Jan 23, 2004... Received the final notarized copies of our Home Study.

Jan 27, 2004... We drove to Tallahassee to get all of our documents Apostilled. Some of the documents weren't correct, so we had to redo them. We bought Susan Hawkes some cookies and brownies because she was so nice in helping us. She became a great advocate for us and we worked directly with her during some "last minute" rushing. Another Angel.

So basically from the date we signed the initial paperwork (Nov 17, 2003) til the day we mailed in the last document (Jan 27, 2004), it took us 10 weeks. People, this alone is nothing short of a miracle. It takes months to get all this paperwork done and we did it in weeks.

FEB MAR APR... ENDLESS WAITING. NO NEWS. We had one typo on the home study that we had to redo, but nothing big. We called our Agency every Monday. We wanted to hear from them every week. Even if it was just for them to say "No News." We liked knowing that we were still on their minds. The waiting continued...Be still my heart.

XOXO-

Apollo 13 was intended to be the third manned lunar-landing mission, a faulty electrical system (w/ explosion) forced it to be aborted. The popular phrase "Houston, we have a problem" originated from the Apollo 13 mission, it was a radio transmission between one of the astronauts to mission control center - the original message was "Houston, we've had a problem".

Simple Handmade Books

I've seen little books like this all around, but now that I have a sewing machine I finally got to make some. I made the covers from thick art magazine covers (from my collage scraps drawer) and then used a paper cutter to cut the pages. fold in half, and sew a line down the middle. simple and very satisfying!

It's going to really be fun when the kids get old enough to write their own stories. But even now it's a great activity. Jack and Tess love drawing in them.

I am Totally Funked!

Did that title get you? Now, get your mind out of the gutter 'cause I'm going to need you!!

This is a little story about my house & guest bathroom. You see, I have moved, a lot. Due to all this moving, I am worn out from home improvement projects. Just as soon as I'd get the drapes hung, we'd move. So with my current house, I did not hang drapes and now we have stayed put for 3 years (go figure).

So, I am ready to start improving my spaces but I have another problem, my house. My house is nice and I am afraid to touch it. This is the first house I have ever lived in that I am totally uninspired (i.e. overwhelmed). I am in a funk. The ceilings are high, the baseboards are tall and the crown molding is stacked. Did I mention the solid 10 ft. doors? They are a beast (but pretty & sound resistant). I feel overwhelmed. It is one of these homes that the simplest of projects turns into a domino effect of other fixes. I am totally funktified and out of my element.

This is where I turn to you...my loyal, talented, awe-inspiring readers. Some of you have remodeled your bathrooms in a snap, others can whip up a design board on Polyvore while you floss your teeth. Help de-funk me.

What would you do?

IMG_2437
This is the Vanity. I thought about finding an old dresser and modifying with a sink. I love square sinks. I am having a hard time finding a dresser that is 30" or less. The sink desperately needs storage and countertop space, a new mirror, plumbing fixture, towel rack and vanity light.

IMG_2435
Flooring...gotta go. This is were I get overwhelmed. I can lay tile but did you see those baseboards? I don't want to have to pop them off. I guess the quarter round will have to come up, then I can lay new quarter round (after I paint it!!)...this is were I take a deep breath and hold it.

IMG_2432
This is a Z shaped bathroom. Behind the door is another door & closet. Should I pull up the pre-fab tub? I want to keep a tub/shower combo in this space. Tile surround would be nice but I am starting to add costs $$. How about a cabinet above the toilet?

IMG_2429
Additional Photo of Vanity area...

IMG_2430
Additional photos of tub & vanity...

IMG_2433
This is shot inside the bathroom with the door closed. The door to the right is the small linen closet.

IMG_2434
Another view...with a large blank wall across from the toilet.

IMG_2436
Ceiling light...lovely, I know. My fear is that if I replace this light then I will have to repair the ceiling and we all know what ceilings look like repaired!!

Please (I am begging) leave me a comment on your ideas. If you have any links I should look at please leave them in a comment. Also, if you are a "professional" and have a design service, leave me a comment about this too. Here are some pictures of "what I like"...

BathroomCollage

By the way, to save money, I can do all the remodel work myself (well, except my drywall technique is something to be desired and I am terrified of a nail gun)! On the topic of money..I'm not sure of my budget. I guess if I like the design/ideas enough, I will pay for it or find a cost effective "look-a-like".

Check this out (after you get done helping me)!
