I found a tutorial on the web.... and I can't resist to make some of these ric rac dahlias... with AnnyMay's touch for sure!

These brooches are a colorful and fun accompaniment to any outfit. Hand sewn with care and detail these fashionable rosettes or brooches sits perfectly on a shawl, scarf, jacket, hat, handbag, purse, dress or evening clutch bag to add a little something extra to your look.

I have embellished the flower by stitching a button and sometimes lace to the center.
The brooch is backed with felt and finished with a silver clasp fastener.

big red tumble of love

It's my day off from my day job, which means I'm working around the studio, and catching up.... so much to do.  So much so, I found myself wanting a bit of adventure, and even though I have quite come to dislike sewing, I took out my machines, and well, they did not drive me bonkers with broken threads, empty spools, mish mash mess with my overlocker... it was surprisingly without incident. (I did have to change the thread though - that was almost enough to make me stop! - told you I dislike sewing).

The part about sewing that I do like is what you can achieve. I think this is what motivated me in the first place. I didn't like the sewing machines, but I loved making the dresses, cushions, etc.

I don't think I'm ready for dresses just now, but I did sew some cushions today.  This one "big red tumble of love" is quite huge. It measures almost 60cm square. Nice! Shown here with soft down insert, but I made more of these - smaller ones... I might put them in my etsy shop, but I'm not sure.... see what happens....

"Conversations with bird girl" Part I & "Darling You're so Square"

One thing I've noticed is that, although I may have swapped my paint brush for a sewing machine, I still love language. I like the potential in clothes to be more of an art, as opposed to something you just put on. A title takes it to another level.

Maybe this is more personal and evident in the creative process, and not so much something you think of when you reach into your wardrobe... hmmmm, will I wear "Mr Smith Takes Auntie Jackie Out" or "Dorothy Lost the Can of Tomatoes on the Way Home" or will I wear "Conversations with Bird Girl Part I?"

For most people, it's not really like that at all! Who can remember all the titles anyway?! It's more like ' hmmmm, red dress, bird dress, green dress...." Nevertheless, it's the process that matters to me, and so I decided to start a a series of two new projects. Yes, you guessed it... "Conversations with Bird Girl" and "Darling You're So Square". Each is a celebration of different elements. Bird Girl is more whimsical and fairytale like for me, it embodies what I like about folk art, amongst other things, and "Darling You're So Square" is a celebration of garish, and not so garish vintage fabrics made between the 1950's and late 1960's.
