Speed Racer Papercraft - Mach 5
So the Speed Racer movie is coming out next week, I've seen both the domestic and international trailer a few times and I still remain unsold based on it. As a fan of the original anime series (Mach GoGoGo), it's really hard to describe how I feel about the look of this movie without pulling my hair out. There's also a Speed Racer video game tie-in for the Nintendo Wii, maybe that's the reason for the overly done flashy eye-candy. And Mach 6 instead of the Mach 5, hopefully the Wachowski brothers can pull this one off.
Here's the original Speed Racer Mach 5 papercraft from Paper Inside.

Vampire Knight: Ichijou Takuma
A noble vampire who is vice-president of the Night Class, Ichijou Takuma lacks the “dark aura” commonly seen in most vampires, making him seem more human than others. Even though he is close friends with Kuran Kaname, the president and noble pure blood, his grandfather unfortunately has a grudge against Kaname, making Takuma often choose between friendship and family.
Vampire Knight is an excellent series. So far, the first few episodes are very promising. And this cosplay does it justice.
Tango-No-Sekku Papercraft
I mentioned on a previous post about Japan's Children's Day festival being held yearly on the 5th of May, and that Boy's Day (Tango no Sekku) is also celebrated during this time. Samurai warrior dolls, armors, swords, and bows are prominently displayed inside houses along with carp streamers flown outside to symbolize the strength and determination of the carp in Japanese folklore.
In connection to the recent posts regarding Tango no Sekku, here is a Kabuto-Kazari (Samurai warrior battle helmet) papercraft and an origami carp streamer.

Yatterman Papercraft - Yatter-Bark
This dog-shaped robot is the rescue vehicle used by Gan and Ai on the anime series. It's equipped with a bell and a siren. Yatter-Bark doesn't have any cockpit for the Yatterman duo, instead they just hang on to its sides. This papercraft is from the folks at Cubic Character and is not connected to our previous Yatterman post which featured Omotchama, but both are related.

Something similar to yesterday's Gundam papercraft, this is the MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type. It has the has the same color and is also piloted by the greatest mobile suite ace of the One Year War, Char Aznable. Points on math education
Anyways, I foud something really nice at Mathmom's. She's written, I feel, an excellent piece about problems in math education in elementary grades. Her point of view is of classroom instruction, but it's still really relevant even for homeschoolers. Some excerpts:
On calculators:
But to be honest, as much as I hate calculator use in school, in this age of calculators and computers, efficiency at hand computation is not, IMO, the most critical math skill for kids to learn. I am NOT saying that it should be ignored, or that kids should be allowed to skip it, and just use calculators in class (see rant linked above). But it is not, IMO, the be all and end all of math education, nor is it a prerequisite, IMO, for studying anything else.
What I consider even more important is a strong sense of number. I want kids who know immediately when the answer they got (either by hand computation or with a calculator) is way off. I want kids who have an instinctive understanding of the distributive law before it is ever formally taught or named (12 sevens is obviously the same as 10 sevens and 2 more sevens). I want kids who know when the amount of change handed to them makes no sense. I would rather have a kid who can multiply 64 x 25 mentally (by halving 64 twice and doubling 25 twice, to see that it's equal to 16 x 100 = 1600) than a kid who can sit down and carry out the long multiplication with pencil and paper, by rote.
I feel that we need to consider several things when it comes to calculators. It's best when the kids can do mental calculations and do paper-and-pencil methods, including understanding why they work. Calculators should be used judiciously, but used. Like she mentions, number sense is of paramount importance so that kids can estimate their answers and tell if the calculator "got it wrong" (e.g. they punched wrong buttons).
On spiraling curricula:
Steve is right that a spiral curriculum can lead to a lax attitude of "it's ok if they don't master this now, because they'll see it again later" that goes on ad infinitum, and the kid never masters anything. This is clearly no good. But the solution isn't necessarily to take away the spiraling for those who need it, IMO. The solution is to have limits - for example, it's ok if they don't completely "get" long multiplication when it's previewed in 3rd grade, or even when it's introduced more formally in 4th, but they have to get it when it's reviewed in 5th, or they shouldn't move on.
This sounds like a really sane approach.
She also talks about including non-routine problems for ALL students to solve. I definitely recommend this practice and have written about it before! MathMom gives several good reasons for this:
1. First, it provides a fabulous way of helping students to appreciate the uses of the procedures and skills they have learned or are learning.
2. Second, this is the kind of thing that "real mathematicians" do! ... A "mathematician" does not sit down and solve 25 ratio and percent word problems, knowing exactly which skills are required to perform the computations. Instead, she investigates "puzzles", looks for interesting patterns makes new discoveries, generalizes results.
3. Third, it develops self esteem and confidence.
4. Fourth, it builds transferrable problem solving skills.
Read it all at Ramblings of a math mom: Math wars.

Inuyasha: Sesshomaru
Sesshomaru is the older half-brother of Inuyasha. He is a full fledged Inu Yokai (Dog Demon, literal translation), and is usually stoic and hard to read.In the beginning of the series, he is a ruthless enemy of Inuyasha, wanting to take the Tetsusaiga from him, but Sesshomaru soon becomes compassionate towards Jaken, his servant, and Rin, an orphaned human who showed him kindness while he was injured.
This is a really beautiful cosplay of my favorite yokai of the series! He looks so peaceful, sleeping by the tree. No wonder Rin took a liking to him the moment she saw him.

Pokemon Papercraft - Magnemite / Magneton
We're looking at the Magnemite papercraft from designer Kirasu. This Pokemon is a robotic lifeform that looks like an eyeball in a metal socket with a horse shoe magnet on each of its sides. There's three Philips head screws attached to it, two for its feet, and one on top of its head, probably an antenna. It's considered to be an Electrical/Steel type, and just like some of the other Pokemon the Magnemite has an evolved form called the Magneton. Just build three Magnemites and you've got yourself a Magneton. The pattern is in PDO format so you'll need the free Pepakura viewer to open this file. Thanks to the designer for sending it in.

This is one hot cosplay. 8) I must wear shades… Although I wish the cosplayer would smile a little, since Kyouya is known for his signature smile.

Relax Bear Papercraft - Children's Day
May 5 is Children's Day in Japan, they observe Tango-No-Sekku (Boy's Festival) to celebrate children's healthy growth and happiness. From late April to early May families display brightly colored carp streamers hoisted on a bamboo pole outside their homes called Koi-Nobori, a carp is flown for each son in the family - with the sizes ranging from big (eldest) to small (youngest). Why the carp? the Japanese consider it the most spirited of fish, because of its strength, vigor, and perseverance when swimming upstream.
Inside the house, families display armor, swords, bows, and Boy's Day Dolls (gogatuningyo). The kuma0rila blog has now put up this new Relax Bear papercraft with Relax Bear (Rilakkuma) himself on a carp suit and his friend Korilakkuma wearing a cute red apron of some sort.

Then there's the Super Mario characters like Magic Mushroom, Bob-omb,Koopa Troopa, and many more. Not all the papercrafts are Chokipeta-quality, but they're good enough in their own way. Enjoy kids.
And to Nintendo Co., with all that ridiculous amount of money ($1 billion) that you're raking in from the Wii and DS, couldn't you at least provide us some official papercrafts. The cost of it, wouldn't even put a dent on your wallet.

Kung Fu Panda Papercraft
With a ton of good movies lined up for summer 2008, DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda is probably one of the most anticpated film for younger audiences, right there with Pixar's Wall-E. The story is about a lazy, slacker panda named Po who teams up with the legendary Furious Five (Tigress, Crane, Mantis,Viper, and Monkey) under the guidance of Master Shifu, to save the Valley of Peace from a villainous snow leopard called Tai Lung.
Here's another great release from HP, the Kung Fu Panda papercraft are cute and much better than they're first try (remember Shrek 3D?) The paper model set includes all of the Furious Five and Master Panda Po. Grab them now and be sure to "Prepare for Awesomeness"

2008 Olympic Papercraft Mascots
The Fuwa or "good luck dolls" in Chinese are the official mascots for the 2008 Summer Olympics being held in Beijing. They were designed by Han Meilin and consist of five members. They are Beibei (blue), Jingjing (black), Huanhuan (red), Yingying (yellow?) and Nini (green) - like other mascots before them, each one represents a color from the five Olympic Rings. I'm not sure about Yinying though, one of the official colors is yellow, but he looks more orange to me. Probably a result of China flexing its muscle again, defiant as always.
The designer calls himself paperpop and makes his home at the cardmodel site (China). He has released the first (Beibei) of the five Olympic papercrafts and would continue to do so on the 24th of each month until all five mascots are done, with the last one being on the actual end date of the Olympic games.
Don't forget to bookmark and come back on the scheduled release dates:
BeiBei - April 24 (Available Now), JingJing - May 24, HuanHuan - June 24, YingYing - July 24, NiNi - August 24.

Get Backers: Fuchoin Kazuki
The scion of the noble Fuchoin family, Kazuki is often mistaken for a girl being that his fighting abilities emphasize on “grace”. His feminine looks come as an advantage to his job as an information seeker, making him one of the most knowledgeable characters in the series. He is often naive when it comes to the people he chooses to associate with, because he trusted Saizou Tofuin and Uryuu Toshiki even after they betrayed him. This undying form of trust is also what makes his true friends stay loyal to him. He uses koto strings as his primary weapon, and is so good that he is given the title “Prince of Fear”.
Obviously, this is a girl cosplaying Kazuki, but the characters does look and act like a girl anyway. Wonderful cosplay!

Gensomaden Saiyuki: Cho Hakkai
Probably the most level-headed member of the group, Cho Hakkai is the 4th Member of Genjo Sanzo’s group. He is formerly known as Cho Gonou, a school teacher who loves children and his beloved Kanan. Unfortunately, his life changed significantly when Kanan was kidnapped by the Hyakugenmaoh, a demon tribe.
He attempted to rescue her and was successful in killing of a thousand yokai (demons), turning himself into a demon as well. However, his rescue ended in failure as Kanan killed herself in front of him, saying that she is no longer worthy of him for carrying the child of a demon within her.
A sad story, but Hakkai eventually found solace with Sanzo’s party. He’s usually the one who has to make sure everything is in order and that the other members don’t end up killing each other. His demonic self is controlled by the 3 ear bands he wears on his left ear. Once removed, he is said to have enough power to rival Goku’s.

Earth Day Papercraft - 2008
Today is Earth Day, a day that we call for action to protect our blue planet's fragile ecosystems from our excessive and unrestrained use of its natural resources. I've searched for some Earth Day papercraft or anything related to it but there's not much out there that has good quality to them. These three however, fit perfectly. We start of with Canon's Globe Puzzle papercraft, we've previously shown this one before but its a very good paper model and educational tool that we'll show it again.
Next we go to Italia to our friend Pino's place (Paperpino) for his Earth Relief Globe papercraft, and finally we visit Japan to see the eco-kun papercraft character, it's a mascot for the Kahma Company Ltd. that promotes eco-friendly products - Kahma is a DIY hardware and household goods store, similar to Home Depot or Lowes here in the US.

Tekken 5: Kazama Asuka
More commonly known as the cousin of Kazama Jin, Asuka is a brash, arrogant girl who has strong confidence in her fighting abilities. As a young child, she is trained by her father taught her the Kazama-style Traditional Martial Arts. She is a vigilante of sorts, who prefers to stop fights by “knock out”, although in the Play Station 2’s Tekken 5 opening, she’s seen saving a little kitty. She enters the Tekken 5 tournament in order to redeem her dojo and get her revenge.

Video Game Papercraft - PC Gamer
Yesterday, I went to my local Barnes and Noble bookstore to check out a new section on the store that is carrying imported Japanese books, mostly manga, anime, and origami stuff. Sad to say I didn't find anything related to papercrafts. So I went to the magazine section to check out some video game mags and there it was, a (Fallout 3) Vault Boy papercraft staring at me. I quickly grabbed the mag and tried to see what other stuff was in it. The magazine is the PC GAMER HOW TO: The Ultimate Guide to DIY Gaming edition. I went straight to the particular article, they called it "Gaming Papercraft! Time To Test Your Finger Dexterity" - the first one is a simpler version of Portal's weighted companion cube, followed by the Fallout 3 Vault Boy, then a Bioshock Big Daddy papercraft, and finally a Half-Life 2 Gordon Freeman papercraft. The mag also indicates that all the paper models were done in Pepakura Designer. It's not the best of models, but it's good enough for beginners.
I know I'm going to receive a lot of request for a scan, but this one is a no go. The mag is only $10 cheap and its available everywhere, I think anybody interested can afford this one. Pardon the quality of the photos, my camera phone is old.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Youko Kurama 02
How many Kurama’s have plagued this blog? I think I may have lost count… Being that he has 2 forms (ok, 3 including his full fox form), and he’s one of the most popular characters in the Yu Yu Hakusho series, I’m not surprised so many cosplayers portrayed him.
I suppose people will complain about the usage of fake roses as opposed to real ones… But, I don’t think real roses can be arranged to intertwine that way, can it? You have to admit though, the pose and the expression on Youko’s face is absolutely gorgeous. Probably one of my most favorite cosplays of him so far! Nice job!
