Review: CAMS & STAMS books from Curriculum Associates

I have just finished my review of CAMS & STAMS books from Curriculum Associates... It is a series of assessment books, student worktexts, and teacher guides for struggling students that presents each math topic in a highly scaffolded manner.

These books are supplemental to any basal math curriculum, and have been specifically designed to support struggling students. Each level consists of:

  • a student book (consumable worktext) with instruction and exercises. This is the heart of the program, and always covers the most important topics of the grade level, as given in the NCTM Focal Points and Connections.
  • A test booklet, which contains a pretest, a postest, and four "benchmark" tests. The benchmark tests are to be used to monitor student progress throughout the year.
  • A very detailed teacher guide for the student text, and another, much thinner teacher guide for the assessment booklet.

Recently I've had the pleasure of adding to MathMammoth.com a series of workbooks titled States by the Numbers, by Make It Real Learning company.

States by the Numbers is a series of workbooks where the problems in each workbook are based on data from the Census Bureau's 2008 Statistical Abstract of the United States.

These workbooks offer a real-data math adventure across the United States! You can use the workbook for your state along with other resources as a unit study about your own state, or your other favorite states. Meanwhile the students will also learn and practice place values, rounding, estimation, fractions and percentages.

There are 50 workbooks in the series — one for each state. Each workbook includes basic instruction and 80 practice problems. The problems can be used on grades 3-7; probably the best fit is for grades 4-6.

Since the activities teach both mathematics and social studies, many teachers and families enjoy using the workbooks to reinforce mathematics across the curriculum. Although the activities may be effectively used in a formal teaching setting, they are designed specifically for the independent learner.

Please see this page for a list of mathematical objectives in each of the books.

I've completed the Math Mammoth Algebra 1-A and 1-B worksheets collections. These worksheets cover all the topics in a typical algebra 1 course. Problems are again very varied.

The collection is designed to be used by teachers and tutors. It is not a text that explains algebra — it is a collection of worksheets or a workbook. But if you already have a textbook, the worksheets can supplement and provide extra practice, no matter what algebra program you're using.

Prices: Algebra 1-A is $6.50, 1-B is $5.50, answer keys $2 each. You can get both A and B plus their answer keys for $11.50.

Here are links to the sample worksheets:

1-A Contents

Learning fractions visually

First of all I want to mention that Henry at Why Homeschool is looking for homeschooling carnival submissions for an anniversary edition next week. Check here for instructions.

And then, about fractions. I have now updated and improved my two fractions workbooks.

In these books, I've strived to teach all fraction operations visually, and explain why the various rules for fraction operations work.

I know, most math books have pie charts for fractions as well, but here's the difference: in my books, the kids do a lot of exercises using those pies, and not just see them once in the beginning of the lesson.

And these are not manipulative exercises but simply picture exercises in the book.

I've always felt you need to first get the kid to understand what fractions are and only then start dealing with rules.

Those rules so often just get confused with each other. (Have you ever had a child try add fractions by adding the numerators and the denominators...?)

I've strived to create lessons that gently guide the student in discovering the "rule" for multiplying or dividing fractions, while doing all those picture exercises.

We need to strive that our students first remember some simple pictures in their minds before they start applying some half-forgotten rule and just hoping it's right.

So that's the goal of these two fraction workbooks. They are sold as PDF files that you download and then print; the first book is $4, and the other is $3.50.
