Buffy Summers is the lead character and namesake from uber science fiction director, Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. Buffy is a high school cheerleader who discovers that she is the "Slayer" (aka Chosen One) - a female that has been given mystical powers and enhanced skills to fight against the forces of evil. Some of her abilities include: supernatural strength, stamina, agility, and reflexes, also has rapid healing, enhanced intuition, and propethic dreams.

Paper models for polyhedra

Have you ever wanted to fold a pyramid or some of the other interesting polyhedron out of paper?

Folding and gluing one or two is a great summer math project also, and will keep kids busy for a while.

Singapore math approach marches on.. to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has just announced the launch of a new math curriculum, titled "Math in Focus", which is adapted from Singapore's most widely used program, My Pals Are Here! Maths.

Who would have thought! Not I. This series contains "carefully... paced instruction of fewer topics at each grade in greater depth to ensure mastery". That's exactly what I've wanted to see in school books and what I have tried to create with Math Mammoth.

It also has a close alignment to the NCTM Focal Points, a "concrete to pictorial to abstract" approach, and instruction centered around problem solving using multiple models.

I feel quite surprised. See Math In Focus website for more.

It appears NCTM's Focal Points are having their effect.

Embraer Lineage 1000 Jet Papercraft

The Embraer Lineage 1000 is actually a variation of the popular Embraer 190 and is now more focused on being a business jet. Instead of the Embraer 190's 100+ capacity seating, the Lineage 1000 has modified insides to luxuriously accomodate 19 people - that includes bedrooms and washroom with running water. Fuel tanks have also been added to double its range.

WoW Papercraft - Wolpertinger Pet

The Wolpertinger is a small pet in the World of Warcraft universe, it's depicted as a rabbit-like beast with wings and antlers - looks similar to a jackalope.

Wolpertinger can be acquired by doing the "Catch the Wild Wolpertinger!" quest or by purchasing it for 50 silver. Only you, your party, and drunk folks can see your pet. The Wolpertinger is based on a creature with the same name and description from German / Bavarian folklore.

Inuyasha: Sesshoumaru and Rin

Lord of the Western Lands and rightful owner of the Tenseiga, Sesshoumaru came upon an orphaned girl named Rin after he was heavily injured by his half-brother Inuyasha. At first, Sesshoumaru shows little interest in Rin, despite her bringing him fish she stole from the outskirts of a small village she lived in and getting beaten for it.

When Koga attacks Rin’s village, she is unfortunately killed by his wolves. Sesshoumaru recognizes her scent and follows it to find her corpse. Remembering her kindness, Sesshoumaru decides to test the power of his Tenseiga and brings Rin back to life. Since then, Rin has followed Sesshoumaru wherever he went, not saying much, but always smiling for him.

Cute cosplay. Though this shows a much older Rin near the end of the series. I think she really played a part in making Sesshoumaru more compassionate. Great work!

Not Speakerboss Papercraft Toy

So Sjors Trimbach made a series of papercraft speakers made in the colors of the rainbow to honor a good friend who was diagnosed with cancer, very nice friend he is.

This is not that papercraft ^^, this is a look-a-like copy of it, an anon from the papercraft forums designed one just like it. The original had seven Speakerboss papercrafts, this is just one item (green).

All in all, Sjors made two sets of seven - first set was given to his friends and the second set was sold, with the proceeds donated to the Dutch Cancer Society. Hat tip to reader Matty for the links, pics, and info.
